The client came to us looking to retain as much of the character from the original barn as possible whilst creating a healthy, sustainable new home. They were insistent that original features were retained and only minimal work was needed to revitalise this derelict building.
We focused on minimalism within the concept. Only adding new openings where absolutely necessary. We proposed a small, subtle extension to the rear which is barely visible from the garden to house a new bedroom and bathroom. We retained the separation between the main barn and the ancillary storage building and created a small stand along bedroom and en-suite for guests.
We proposed timber elements throughout the design and re-used the existing trusses. Natural wood fibre insulation was specified wherever possible to allow the old stone walls to continue breathing and balancing their moisture content which maintained a healthy internal environment.
